Did you know that our body feeds itself to stay healthy?
Autophagy refers to the way in which the cells of our body can
break down their contents and separate them in part called a lysosome to
make them reusable (recycling). In the 1990s, Japanese cell biology specialist
Yoshinori Ohsumi discovered how autophagy works. Its discovery helped us better
understand how our cells fight against deadly and infectious diseases and
protect us from disease.
Yoshinori Ohsumi was awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize in Medicine
for this discovery
